Robbie McIntosh matches John on every lick and with slide none the less. Robbie is one the hidden treasures of Rock’n Roll. Having played with McCartney and others.
It says a lot of John’s character to see him let one of his side-men show him up.
I don’t think Mayer intends to either. He has consistently mentioned SRV as his all time greatest influence in countless interviews. The guy has an “SRV” tattoo on his arm!!!
Still he writes pop songs and is in that respect no SRV clone, like too many out there that even put on bolero hats and cowboy boots.
Even a phenom like Oz Noy admits to having his own SRV phase. Listen to him, he plays space-rock-jazz. The opposite spectrum of Mayer.
Too many idiots focus on whos “better” than mayer instead of just enjoying his goddamn music and performance… morons.

Everyone here believes that Mayer is a God… he is talented, but his is hardly innovative. Duh, I obviously love Hendrix, no one is better. The pussy sentence in my comment stands alone for a reason- it has nothing to do with Hendrix. And, yes, Mayer is still a pussy.

Joe Bonamassa is a GREAT guitarist . . . but I think Mayer’s playing has more feeling in it. Technically, they’re both phenominal guitarists.
And for the FUCKING LOVE OF GOD . . . there is no right answer when compairing musicians! Being one myelf, it’s all about playing with whoever can keep up with you, and having a good time. Do you really think these guitarists all sit at home by themselves going “Fuck Jimi . . . he’s got nothing on me”- NO. They admire eachother and take what they can!

except that clapton has admitted that mayer is the shit. that’s why clapton and mayer play together. there are tons of videos on youtube of them playing together. check out ‘broken hearted’ and ‘crossroads.’

guys, ive been playing for almost 10 years now and even i can do all that he’s doing…in short, distortion can make ANYONE sound great….i’d like to see him go against someone like clapton, or SRV (if he was alive)…cuz i think his ass would be handed to him….
john mayer is absolutely the best guitarist out right now in this genre the only ones i would even compare to him as as talented in any genre are the likes of don ross and tommy emmanuel to say he sucks or hes not even as good as hendrix is dumb and ignorant. hendrix was more revolutionary but mayer is equally good
