this is one way to fan the hats… the way to do it if you play traditional without flipping out the stick is to just flick the hats closer to the outside with you left hand… to explain w/o me posting a vid… think of hitting the part of the hats left most of you, and just do a regular stroke with the hi hats in the middle… imagine hitting a surface right under the cymbal so the hats are in teh middle of your stroke…

re: the left hand grip….you’ve actually seen Philly Joe Jones or Max Roach grip the left stick like that? Steve Smith originally taught me how to do this, but he explained that the left hand grip should be w/a traditional grip. You obviously do it very well the way you’re doing it, so I suppose it doesn’t matter. I’m just wondering now if there was another way that the old-time jazz players did this. You’ve actually seen them grip it like that?
